Hold These F%&$ers Accountable

I wonder what it takes to hold our administration accountable. Apparently, sanctioning torture doesn't do it. Violating the Geneva Conventions doesn't do it. Lying to the American people in order to invade another nation that hadn't threatened us doesn't do it. Lying to Congress doesn't do it. Politicizing government agencies illegally doesn't do it. Firing prosecutors who won't do the Republican Party's bidding doesn't do it. Running our country's reputation into the ground doesn't do it.

Please, Congress, stop "asking questions" about "misstatements," stop tearing your hair out, stop losing sleep. Hold someone accountable for the lies and the violations of our laws and principles. Don't abdicate your oversight responsibility. If you don't do it, who will? What has happened to our system of checks and balances? What has happened to our country? Who are we? I've never been so ashamed of my government in my entire life. The damage that has been done in the past six years will not be undone in my lifetime. I can only hope for a new beginning on January 20, 2009, and hope that more damage is not done before then. I ask Congress and every sentient being: if we can't hold them accountable legally, let's at least hound them until they leave office. Hound them about the torture. Hound them about the lying. Hound them about the dead. Hound them about the refugees and the displaced. Get the facts down for history to sort out. Distract them with questions and investigations so they won't have the time or energy left over to get us into any more trouble. Thank God that at least we still have enough of a system left that we can speak out.

WTOP News reports: "Documents indicate eight congressional leaders were briefed about the Bush administration's terrorist surveillance program on the eve of its expiration in 2004, contradicting sworn Senate testimony this week by Attorney General Alberto Gonzales." As usual, there are "questions" about misstatements. "The documents underscore questions about Gonzales' credibility as senators consider whether a perjury investigation should be opened." What's to consider? There are numerous documents and statements on the record that contradict Gonzales's sworn testimony on numerous occasions. Why haven't perjury charges been filed already? Why continue to call this man before Congress and allow him to lie and weasel and attempt to deceive, over and over? Stop letting these people get away with trashing our system and our principles. Contempt of Congress citations against the small fish won't cut it.
